If you’re working toward a low tox home and lifestyle, it’s easy to focus on your food, skincare, and cleaning products. But, your dog’s treats deserve the same attention.
Many store-bought options are packed with fillers, preservatives, and synthetic flavours that add little nutritional value and can be hard on your dog’s digestion. If your dog suffers from allergies, common ingredients like wheat, poultry, and food colourings can make them feel worse.
The good news? Making your own dog treats is incredibly simple and inexpensive. These homemade dog cookies use just 3 wholesome ingredients: roasted sweet potato, oats, and natural peanut butter to create a gut-friendly, healthy treat that your dog will love.
Why these 3 ingredients are good for dogs
Roasted sweet potato | Rich in fibre for healthy digestion, packed with vitamins A and C for immune health, and gives a natural sweetness without added refined sugar
Rolled oats | A gut-friendly and fibre-rich alternative to flour-based treats that contain wheat. Oats are naturally gluten-free
Peanut butter | A source of healthy fats for dog’s skin and brain, a source of plant-based protein, and it adds flavour that dogs love without artificial ingredients

Why avoid fillers, preservatives, and synthetic ingredients
So many store-bought dog treats contain low quality fillers like corn, soy, and by-products, plus artificial flavourings, dyes, and preservatives that can worsen allergic reactions or food sensitivites by compromising their gut health. Here’s why this matters:
Difficult to digest | Fillers can be difficult to digest for some dogs, leading to bloating and stomach upset
Low nutrition | These types of ingredients can take the place of real food ingredients and offer no nourishment
Worsen sensitivities | Artificial additives can trigger, or worsen, skin issues from food sensitivities, leading to itchy ears, paws, elbows, and digestive upset
